DR G S KHWAJA

Dr. G. S. Khwaja is a serious scholar of Arabic and Persian epigraphy, medieval numismatics, Islamic calligraphy, and architecture. Dr. Khwaja, a postgraduate in Arabic and Persian literature, obtained his postgraduate degree in journalism and then a Ph.D. from Nagpur University. He is also a khattat (professional calligrapher).


In 1985, he joined the Archaeological Survey of India in Nagpur, where he headed the Epigraphy Branch for Arabic and Persian Inscriptions before retiring as Director Epigraphy in 2016. He is a member of the Board of Studies and Faculty at the Institute of Archaeology, Delhi, for Historical Archaeology and Epigraphy.


He has contributed many research articles on epigraphy and numismatics in reputed national and international journals and seminars. He has to credit his books, namely: Archaeological Glimpses of Indian Culture (1995), Diwan-i-Husain (Dakkani Anthology (1998), Ellichapur: Tarikh aur Thaqafat (2001), Mashaheer-i-Berar Biographies (2005), Akbar ke Ahd mein Farsi Tarikh Nawisi Persian Historiography (2009), Islamic Architecture of Delhi (2011), and Encyclopaedia of Islamic Architecture (2013, in 3 Volumes).


He visited Syria in 1985 as part of UNESCO's cultural exchange program, and Afghanistan in 2014 with an Indian delegation. Recently, he visited Iran to conduct a workshop on Islamic calligraphy.
