TEMPLES AND SCULPTURES OF ORISSA
TEMPLES AND SCULPTURES OF ORISSA (Bhubaneswar, Konarak, Puri & Hirapur)
During my service as an Archaeologist, that is, Senior Technical Assistant, in the Excavations Branch IV of Archaeological Survey of India at Bhubaneswar, Orissa, from 1983 to 1991, I explored and surveyed many sites and also attended excavations at Khalkhatapatna (1983-1984), Shyam Sundar Tilla (1983-1984), Thakurani Tilla (1983-1984), Banahalli (1985-1986), Udayagiri (1986-1990), and Barabati Fort (1990-1991). I visited almost all monuments and living temples, for the study of Orissan style and Sculptures at Bhubaneswar, Konarak. Puri and Hirapur made detailed notes during my service at Bhubaneswar.
After joining my service as Director (Museum) in the Kannada University, Hampi, I continued my studies on Orissan Temple style and Sculptures, and re-visited many times to Bhubaneswar and other places to complete my studies, but due to University works I could not complete my work and completed after I retire from the University.
Chapter I deal with an Introduction and Historical Perspectives and Chapter II deals in detail with the Temples at Bhubaneswar, Konark, Puri, and Hirapur. While Chapter III details with Religious Condition of Orissa in general and Chapter IV with Origin and development of Sculptures. Chapters V and VI with Saivate and Vaishnavate Sculptures from the temples. While Chapters VII and VIII deal with Surya and Shakta Sculptures from Orissa. Chapters IX and X refer to Jain and Buddhist sculptures from Orissa whereas last Chapter XI deals with Minor and Other Scukptures from Orissa.
Although several scholars have dealt with the Orissan temple style and sculptures, the author has tried here to complete all the published information in the form of a compendium with due acknowledgments.
